Easing the Burden of Retiring Single

Helen yogaRetirement is often depicted as an idyllic time when couples take long walks on the beach, watch their grandchildren graduate from college, and care for each other well into their golden years.  Yet, it’s estimated that more than 43% of all US residents are single, with more than 30 million Americans over the age 55 holding that distinction.  Single people face unique planning challenges because they are solely responsible for their financial security as well as their emotional well-being throughout their retirement.

Unmarried retirees may not need to consider other people’s opinion in their decision-making but the tradeoff is not being able to count on another’s salary, retirement savings plan, or caregiver as they get older.  That makes it all the more critical that the decisions they do make are made with care and prudence.
