Grand Seiko Hi-Beat ‘Shubun’ Autumn Moonlight

This is a modern re-interpretation of the celebrated 62GS from 1967. The 62GS was not only Grand Seiko’s first watch with an automatic movement, but it was also, along with the 44GS released the same year, the watch that first expressed the design grammar, the Grand Seiko Style, that still shapes all Grand Seiko designs today. Like its predecessor, this modern re-interpretation has the characteristic sharp edges and perfect distortion-free surfaces that only Zaratsu polishing can create and a wide dial opening which was achieved thanks to a bezel-free construction.

‘The Nature of Time’ theme features prominently in Grand Seiko watch designs – a Japanese spirituality where each moment is a unique expression unveiled through light and shadow. The watchmakers’ pride in their surroundings is represented from engineering watch movements which emulate the smooth motion of time passing, to creating dials reflecting the beauty of Japanese nature.

The dial is inspired by the clear night skies & crisp bright moonlit night – “tsukiyo” – that Japan enjoys at Shūbun, the sixteenth of the twenty-four sekki or seasons which falls around the time of the autumn equinox after a warm autumnal day; the night is quiet except for the last of the chirping crickets as the last of the summer ebbs away. Since ancient times these changes in the weather and nature have been incorporated into Japanese daily life.

The gold toned Grand Seiko lettering and seconds hand stand out in sharp relief against the deep blue dial, echoing the way that moon and stars illuminate the sky at night.

This model is powered by the 9S85 Mechanical movement, sophisticated watchmaking innovation through the precision controlling mainspring, the hairspring, and the escapement. Together the movement showcases the power and dynamism of the Mechanical Hi-Beat 36,000 with a power reserve of 55 hours. It is hand assembled by the skilled craftsmen and women of the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi.
