The European Commission has designated 2012 as the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations.
It’s a bit of a mouthful, but basically the aim is to promote active ageing and to ensure that a rapidly growing population in their late 50s and over across Europe is as mobile as possible.
One of the main objectives is to raise awareness of the value of active ageing and to highlight the useful contribution that older people make to society and the economy, and try to generate better opportunities for older people to play their part in the labour market. Put simply, if people are living longer then it benefits the economy if they’re able to work longer.
