Seniors find spelling bee keeps minds active

“The dilemma in fundamental existence across the environment is easily apparent.”

The preceding sentence contains seven of the most commonly misspelled words in the English language. Clarence Bonnet, 81, formerly a senior administrator with The Co-operators, spelled them all correctly on Tuesday.

Bonnet has the reputation as the top speller in the weekly spelling bee held at the Hawthorn Retirement Group’s Guelph Lake Commons Retirement Community on Victoria Road North. In a 32 question bee on Tuesday, Bonnet spelled 31 words right. A reporter 30 years his junior, scored 30 out of 32.
